Mobile Makes for a Better Meal

March 7, 2010

After getting out to meet locals here in Waltham at a networking lunch a few weeks back, I connected with Joshua Bob (@joshsambob) one of the founders of Texturant. It’s a very cool startup – giving restaurants the ability to tell patrons their table is ready by texting them on their phone. He asked me [...]

Web design addition to portfolio

December 1, 2009

Just a quick note to highlight a recent addition to my growing web design tab: Child S.H.A.R.E’s homepage. Working with Portnoy Media Group, I developed a fine tuned front-end homepage for this amazing non-profit based out of Glendale, CA. I am really feeling more and more comfortable branching into front end projects and thinking through [...]

AIGA Make/Think notes

October 17, 2009

The AIGA Voice blog gives an update from the recent Make/Think Conference in Memphis with sketches from designer Carolyn Sewell’s notebook. Love it. Here are a few of her pages, and the full entry on the blog.

With heros like Steven Sagmister and Jim Sherraden from Hatch Show Print that were at this conference, I kick [...]

Where the Wild [hand drawn fonts] Are

October 15, 2009

I simply can not wait to see Where the Wild Things Are. The trailer looks amazing, perhaps even more amazing than that beautiful type hand drawn by Geoff Mcfetridge (ht PicoCool for the source!) that succeeds in capturing the mood.

I love this movie poster too – the use of scale here is fantastic.

Erik Spiekermann’s Axel

June 30, 2009

Erik Spiekermann has introduced a new font this year at TYPO Berlin 2009 called Axel. It’s been designed specifically for screen use by such programs as Microsoft Excel where type tends to be a bit clunky in a program meant to display numbers. More from the FontFeed at FontShop:
Graphic and type designer, and FontFeed founding [...]

International brands

April 27, 2009

As much as a daily email can get tedious, I love the Daily Heller from graphic design critic and thinker Steven Heller. Here is his fascinating post on the growing trend for countries to brand their national identities:
Have you noticed how nations have taken to branding their nationhood lately? If you ask me, there are [...]

Freelancing forecast

April 2, 2009

There is a interesting post over at Freelance Folder by Mason Hipp that predicts most designers will be freelance in 20 years. He gives three reasons:

The Costs of Freelancing are Plummeting
Corporations Are Hiring Freelancers Instead of Employees
Younger Generations Love Freelancing and Independence

I think it is a solid prediction, especially when I look at my [...]

VeggieTales Update

March 31, 2009

This is from one of my favorite blogs, Brand New. Its fun to see what’s changing in familiar brands for better or worse. Though I was initially sad to see this change, it’s growing on me as it is simply a better design solution moving away from stretched letters to custom forms (can’t you see [...]

Girard!

February 4, 2009

Look what’s new from House Industries! An Alexandar Girard line of typefaces and merchandise. Exciting!
I picked up some of his folk-style nativity scene Christmas cards when I was visiting the International Museum of Folk Art in Santa Fe in New Mexico, where he was a curator. They were so beautiful in fact, I had a [...]

Location Typography

November 19, 2008

Carrying over a topic from my previous post … the new Bond film’s location slides were found thanks to a flickr conversation moderated by Matt Hamm, who also created a new set with the images from a UK firm, Tomato. Here are few of my favorites, but check out the set on Tomato’s site or [...]
